A committee of the Conference of Rectors of Polish Universities (KRUP) established to create, maintain, and develop IT systems that support university management in Poland
University Centre for Informatization (abbreviated as MUCI in Polish) is a consortium of over 100 institutions of higher education (HEIs), both public and private. The mission of MUCI is to initiate, coordinate, and support initiatives in the information technology of higher education, such as:
MUCI is open to all HEIs in Poland. It is a non-profit organization, meaning that all its funds are spent on system development and other core activities. Members pay an initial fee, and then an annual contribution based on their size. MUCI’s budget comes entirely from its members. The consortium is governed by the Board of Directors elected for the 4 years terms. The consortium reports its activities to the Council, which consists of rectors’ plenipotentiaries.
A group of MUCI members may propose to launch a project. Projects are supervised by Project Commissions consisting of representatives of the institutions belonging to the group. The Council decides on the project budget, sets goals, and priorities. The Board of Directors hires a Working Team, which is responsible for carrying out the actual project activities, and appoints a project leader.
Of the above, USOS in particular gained wide recognition in Poland. It is a comprehensive student information system used by a large number of HEIs, including top public universities.
The close cooperation among the members of MUCI brings a unique quality to the IT implementation of administrative processes in higher education. The know-how comes from the HEIs themselves. System development is driven by user needs. Processes, rules, and documents are designed, discussed, modified, and unified. The cooperation has an impact not only on the administration of education but on education itself, by supporting transparency and common standards.
In 2026, MUCI will celebrate its 25th anniversary.
